a decago

Today's my anniversary. Ten years. Not with my husband, with my brother.

Truth be told, my brother and I have technically been together since the spring of 1981, when he was, you know, born. And we were pretty good friends as children, though he was friends with everyone. We were even closer as teenagers. Then I moved away. When I told James my plans, we cried together. He asked me who he would talk with, and who would drive him to church. We talked on the phone when we could, and I knew that he had stopped going to church and took up other pursuits. I think it's accurate to say that for a while he forgot who he was. I didn't forget.

I was diligent about writing to James often with a gentle attempt to remind him that he had greater potential than was being used (don't we all?). I am so, so very grateful that he listened.

One fateful day, James received two things in the mail: a letter/card from me, and a letter & article/talk from my husband. The time was right for James to make a decision, and his decision was this: to leave the worldly comforts with which he had become accustomed and work at remembering who he is. For James, decision didn't just mean stopping certain habits and starting certain other habits, it meant a physical move as well: far, far away, from Busti, New York, to Provo, Utah.

Ten years ago tonight I picked him up at the Salt Lake airport. With his guitar slung around his shoulder, he took the steps he needed to turn his life around.

Happy Anniversary, Jimmer.

I love that Tio Tio. And I am so grateful that he has you. And that I have you. And that Monica lets us make really irreverent jokes.

I vote you have a Noonan reunion in El Paso this summer.

Who would have thought back then that he would become the nerd he is today.

A very cute nerd though.

Thanks again.

I love this.

And my favorite line was where you said something about him forgetting, but that you didn't forget. Sometimes I think we all need people to help us remember.
